Purpose:
I believe Classroom Management is the key component in any educational setting. I believe that if students are in a safe environment, then learning can take place. This doesn’t necessarily mean punishing behavior problems but rather a combination of setting the tone in a class, preventing behavior problems with interesting and engaging curriculum and effectively including all students in the classroom so that their needs are met. Having the right environment for all students to learn is my major goal of implementing good classroom management--without it the students would not be able to learn.
The management of any productive classroom begins with the establishment of behavioral expectations. An effective learning environment requires appropriate and acceptable engagement among students and teacher. The purpose of this behavior management plan is to create a positive learning environment where students experience consistent achievement in managing their behavior. This practice is demonstrated and evident in as well as outside of our gifted classroom (i.e. school hallway, art, music, p.e., cafeteria, library, and field trips).
Classroom Expectations:
Our classroom will have a PBIS color coded yard stick to monitor behavior. Students will advance each level of the PBIS stick as they demonstrate the ability to follow the rules of our classroom. Clothes pins will identify each student on the PBIS stick as they advance to the top. If students make it to the top level of the PBIS stick by the end of the day, they will earn HAWKS bucks.
Students will be encouraged to strive for positive behavior in order to get their name clips moved on the PBIS stick.
During the first week of school, I will explain in detail each level of the PBIS stick. Students will be given examples and they will also illustrate images of positive attributes.
For instance, students might illustrate an example of “a positive start”, “making an effort toward achievement” “consistent credible character”, “spotlight spectacular”, “superb student behavior”. These images will be discussed in detail so that students can clearly differientiate between each colored level of the PBIS stick.
There may be a time when the names of some students move down to the orange or red zone of the stick. In this case, student behavior will be closely monitored and counseled by the teacher. Constant counseling (more than 3 times per day) will result in a phone call to the parent.
